Confluence 2026 & Narratess Fall 2026

Summer is rapidly dwindling away. Slowly, but surely, I’m trying to turn thoughts into words and then put those words to page. Occasionally, I even succeed at doing it! Will I have a completed draft by the time 2027 rolls around? Maybe, maybe not, but I’m gonna just keep plugging away and doing my best, which, really, is all anyone can do. (Hey, that goes for you too! Just keep doing your best at whatever you’re doing. You’re awesome!)

July brought about an important milestone in the fledgling career of this self-published Indie author. Our first live and in person event where S.E. Robertson/C.A. Moss and myself attempted to sell our books to fellow humans.

A table covered with a green tablecloth and several signs and copies of books by J. Robert Matthewson and S.E. Robertson/C.A. Moss.

The place was Confluence 2026, Pittsburgh’s 38-year-old Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror book convention. It was a chance to meet some fellow indie authors and possibly a few potential new readers.

Wooden bowls filled with Candy and Pins, next to a sign indication which is sugared and which is sugar-free. A plush cat doll holds a pride flag.

Armed with bowls of free candy (both sugar-filled and sugar-free), along with free promotional pins & bookmarks (also sugar-free), we hoped to entice a few of the attendees to at least stop and glance at our words for sale and perhaps even part with their legal tender in exchange for the privilege of taking some home.

How did we do? Well, my much-beloved and crazy-talented spouse had better luck than me in the sales portion, though I did manage to send a copy of Tales of a Stranger Sister home with someone not related to me by blood, so I’ll call it a win.

A paperback copy of "Tales of a Stranger Sister" with a price sign. In front of the sign are three pins featuring Rose the Kitten from the book.

All joking aside, I truly do consider the experience to have been a worthwhile one, if not financially, then for the learning experience it was. I think both seeing how other authors were tabling their wares and engaging with the attendees definitely gave me some insight of things to try the next time we try this endeavor. And I do think there’ll be a next time. There are some other local events that might be a better fit for our brand of Cozy-adjacent fantasy, or they might not be, but I’m willing to try and find out for myself.

So, when that time comes, you’ll most likely hear about it here first. Stay tuned!

And maybe you’ll even be able to snag one of these sweet promotional bookmarks!

That said, there are no live sales events planned in the immediate future. However, that’s okay because we got one all lined up for the virtual world!

It’s time for the Fall Narratess Indie Fantasy, Sci-Fi & Horror Sale running from August 29th through to the 31st.

The e-book version of Tales of a Stranger Sister will be discounted during those three days and available for $1.99 or the closest international equivalent. If you’re looking for a new read to carry you through tea, soup and sweaters season, then why not my small-scale, slice-of-life, coming-of-age isekai fantasy about siblings, stories, and second chances, eh? And maybe pick up a few dozen of the other novels from other crazy-talented indie authors, as well. You’ll find them here on August 29th:

And hey, if you’ve already bought and red my debut novel, then perhaps you’d like to tell the world your thoughts regarding it? If you’re inclined, reviews and ratings would be super appreciated and mondo helpful.

Okay, it’s back to the word mines with me. Enjoy the last weeks of summer and I hope your fall is cool, cozy, and friggin’ awesome! I’m gonna mull some cider and break out the firepit.
